From the recording The Bluff
I was looking though the internet and saw some photos of this really run-down city street-scape. The people in the photo really didn't look like they wanted to be there.
This provided the idea for the opening line of the song and the rest of it just seemed to come so easily once it was committed to paper! It was all written in around 45 minutes on a wintery Sunday morning.
Lyrics
TO BE GONE
Verse 1
Walking through streets that reek of decay
Hungry ciphers wasting away;
Not a hope nor a prayer
Air thick with loss and despair.
Chorus
I want to be gone
Get me out of here
I just have to run
Ending seems so near
Verse 2
Acrid smoke hangs over a pyre
Funeral dirge from a spectral choir;
Rabid canines hunt in packs
Frightened masses watching their backs.
Chorus
I want to be gone
Get me out of here
I just have to run
Ending seems so near
Verse 3
Looking out for a ray of light
For a future that’s not finite;
Take a risk, take a chance
Need to change my circumstance.
Chorus
I want to be gone
Get me out of here
I just have to run
Ending seems so near
Bridge
How did it all come to this?
Where did it go wrong, where did we miss?
What can I do to change this fate?
To not destroy but to create…………but to create
Verse 3 (reprise)
Looking out for a ray of light
For a future that’s not finite;
Take a risk, take a chance
Need to change my circumstance.
Chorus
I want to be gone
Get me out of here
I just have to run
Ending seems so near
Outro
I have not gone
I am still here
I’ve turned around
The future is near
The future is near
The future is near
The future is near
The future is near
